DAVID PAROISSIEN, Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Buckingham, edits Dickens Quarterly and also works with Susan Shatto as Co-Editor of the Helm Dickens Companions series, to which he has contributed The Companion to ‘Oliver Twist’ (1992) and The Companion to ‘Great Expectations’ (2000). He lives in Oxford, where he writes on various aspects of Dickens, including his interest in English history and the development of his political ideas over several decades. His latest essay, “Dickens the Historian, Carlyle the Novelist: Dickens, Carlyle and the French Revolution”, appears in The Fiction of History (2014), edited by Alexander Lyon Macfie.
